The compass poster is aimed at a collective, initiative, network or organisation in which people are committed to working towards a social, sustainable world rich in nature. The aim is to capture in them both the present-day and the desired society and economy, which means that the results of the lifemaps will be realistic and useful for the transition.
A lifemap scenario is a process, a storyline, with which we can sketch an issue, theme or situation realistically and comprehensively, with the aim of making key points, priorities, red lines and opportunities visible. For the compass poster, there are scenarios for the city en route to integrality and for the application of principles for the new economy in the business model and the strategy.
Examples of strategic themes are: collaborating in communities and alliances, working out a sustainable strategy, dealing with the impact made by change, introducing balance into ‘soft’ and ‘hard’ aspects or making a roadmap on the way to the greater goals which have been set. Appropriate scenarios are available for each of these themes.
On the way
A small group of people arrives at the poster, steps on the road and begins their journey. From the communal past, the road leads via the present to the future and runs up to the horizon. The road doesn’t end there but disappears out of sight.
In the sun, the mission or greater goal is pictured. During the journey on the poster, it will always be visible to the travellers. Having the sun in sight during the making of the lifemap will draw the travellers. The sun on the poster also symbolises fulfilment. On it, the outcomes of the preparations and of earlier work will be made visible, as well as that which has been learned in other projects. Having that which is fulfilled in sight during the making of the lifemap means taking more and more steps based on knowing. This empowers manifestation.
The four tracks
The poster shows the life’s path for a collective, initiative, network or organisation. There are four tracks. Every scenario has its own combination of sticker sets with which to fill in the four-lane route on the poster. For example, for a neighbourhood initiative there are sets of community themes, qualities, patterns and principles of organisation. Or, for a new economy initiative, there are sets of community themes, value proposition statements and new economy principles. It’s always a cohesive combination. This will make sure that the outcomes of the lifemap process will develop in the desired direction.
We decide beforehand which combination of sticker sets is relevant. The content of each sticker set is pre-selected, in an inventory among all the participants, so that a realistic picture can be sketched of what is going on. When everything is ready for the lifemap process to start, participants decide together where the stickers will be pasted. The poster is filled in, step by step, with the community themes forming the framework. This process alone reveals a great deal and adds to the overall outcomes.
Finding the compass
Once the whole poster has been filled in, it’s time to take some distance to study the picture on the poster: the connections, points for development and strength, priorities and voids. To extrapolate what this picture means for the near future, with a view to the mission and greater goal. All the groups present their stories, insights and conclusions to each other. The compass is created in consultation.
We stand on the edge of transformation to a more natural world. The mission of the maker of lifemaps is to find practical answers to the question: how do I care for self, others, places and the planet? How do I take care of all four at every step? The wish is that each and every participant will find their own place and inner guide in the global field of tension.
